Student and Postdoc Special Interest Group OHBM 2023 Programming

OHBM 2023

Get ready to organize your OHBM schedule: the OHBM Student-Postdoc SIG is hosting events especially for our students and postdocs! Add stickers to your badge, join a networking mentorship lunch, attend a roundtable on becoming an independent researcher and a symposium on non-academic neuroscience applications, and don’t miss the highly anticipated student and postdoc social!

Badge Stickers

To kick things off, join us at the registration table on Saturday, July 22nd. We will be giving away badge stickers to help you connect with others in your research area. We will also have stickers for LGBTQ+ scientists to show our support and increase visibility! Plus, we will have helpful information to orient first-time OHBM attendees.

Lunch with Mentors

On Sunday, July 23rd, from 12:15-13:15 in room 512A, we are hosting Lunch with Mentors. This event is an opportunity for informal conversation mentors paired with small groups of mentees. This is a chance to inspire and motivate trainees that comprise the next generation of OHBM scientists. This lunch is RSVP-only. If you didn’t sign up this year, follow us on Twitter to ensure you don’t miss the chance to sign-up next year!

Roundtable: Mapping Your Path to Independence

We are organizing a roundtable on Monday, July 24th (13:00-14:00, Room 4146) titled "Mapping Your Path to Independence: An Interactive Toolkit for Early Career Researchers." The event will feature a panel of scientists who have recently transitioned to independence, as well as seasoned scientists who can offer insights from their experience with training and mentoring young researchers. The event will be divided into two parts. Part 1, "Lessons from My Younger Self: Reflections on the Path to Independence," will include discussions on navigating academia, managing motivation and stress levels, and networking and developing research ideas. Part 2, "Leveraging Your Postdoc to Advance Your Career and Finding Your Voice in Science," will focus on crafting compelling research stories that resonate with target audiences while remaining true to personal and professional values, developing confidence, taking risks, and combating imposter syndrome. This is an excellent opportunity for early career researchers to gain practical insights and tips for advancing their careers.

Monday Night Social

On Monday, July 24th from 20:00-late we will co-host the infamous Monday Night Social and Open Science Gala with the Neuro Beuro. This will take place at Riverside St. Henri, 5020 Rue St.Ambroise and OHBM name tags are required for admission. There will be drinks, music, and good vibes. The first 600 attendees will get a free drink! We will announce the Brain-Art competition winners. Come hangout and celebrate your accomplishments with your fellow trainees!

Symposium: Applying Neuroscience Skills in Clinical and Industry Settings

Lastly, mark your calendars for our symposium on Tuesday, July 25th, from 14:45-16:00 in room 513. During the symposium titled, “Applying Neuroscience Skills in Clinical and Industry Settings,” Experts will share their experiences and insights on how to transition into clinical or industry roles that require skills and training acquired through neuroscience doctoral programs. Michele Veldsman, Director of Neuroscience R&D at Cambridge Cognition, will share how she built clientele through freelance work, how she applies her neuroscience training to her position in industry, and how to present research experience outside of an academic setting. Christian Windischberger will talk about the challenges and opportunities in university spin-offs of products. Specifically, he will describe his experience of starting ALSIX, a medical device manufacturing company, while simultaneously pursuing an academic career. Kevin Aquino worked in biotech as an image analyst at BrainKey.ai after earning his PhD in Physics, and then was promoted to Scientific Director. His talk will focus on his transition from academia to industry, and how his skills learned in academia translate to his new position.
